Emergency & Weather

AlertVolusia Emergency Alerts (signup)

AlertVolusia is Volusia County's emergency mass-notification system, built on Everbridge. It replaced the CodeRED system the county previously used. Residents sign up by area (there is a DeLand-specific signup) and can receive alerts by cell voice/text, email, home phone, and business phone; the free Everbridge Public Safety mobile app also shows notifications. Countywide alerts (e.g., large-scale evacuations) reach anyone signed up in any area.

Boil-Water Notices in DeLand

The City of DeLand issues boil-water notices through its official channels when water-main breaks or repairs compromise pressure: the deland.org Alert Center (Utilities category), the City of DeLand Facebook page, and door/property notices in affected areas. Local media (West Volusia Beacon, ClickOrlando) also report them. The city's Utilities department (Water, Wastewater & Reclaim Water) manages the notices and the follow-up water testing before rescission.

City of DeLand Alert Center

The City of DeLand runs a CivicPlus Alert Center at deland.org where active city alerts (boil-water notices, road closures, emergency management, fire, police, public works, utilities) are posted. Residents can subscribe via Notify Me or per-category RSS feeds.

Flood Zones and Flood Maps (DeLand / Volusia County)

Residents can check FEMA flood zones through the FEMA Map Service Center or Volusia County's own ArcGIS flood map viewer (search by address). The county also publishes FIRM panel PDFs, a flood-zone map book with parcels and streets, and the 5-volume Flood Insurance Study for community 12127C.

Hurricane Evacuation Zones - Know Your Zone (Volusia County)

Volusia County designates hurricane evacuation levels A, BC, and DE, corresponding to likely storm flooding. Residents look up their zone with the county's interactive ArcGIS map. Mobile home, RV, and campsite residents must evacuate in any ordered evacuation regardless of zone; failure to comply with an evacuation order violates Florida law. Most of inland DeLand is outside coastal surge zones, but residents should verify their address.

Hurricane Shelters for DeLand Residents

Volusia County maintains many public shelter locations but does not pre-publish a fixed list; shelters open based on demand per event and openings are announced through the county's emergency preparedness app, the Public Information Network (volusia.org/PIN), Emergency Management social media, and the Citizens Information Hotline. In recent hurricanes (Milton, Oct 2024), DeLand-area shelters included DeLand High School (800 N. Hill Ave., general population, pets accepted) and the Volusia County Fairgrounds (E. New York Ave., people-and-pet shelter).

Non-Emergency Safety Contacts (DeLand / Volusia)

DeLand Police Department non-emergency dispatch is 386-943-8276 (the shared regional VCSO dispatch number for West Volusia); the DeLand PD administrative line is 386-626-7400. The Volusia Sheriff's Office uses regional non-emergency dispatch numbers ending in -VCSO (8276). Poison emergencies: 1-800-222-1222. Community services: dial 211 (United Way of Volusia-Flagler) or 386-253-0563.

Power Outages (Duke Energy Florida serves DeLand)

Duke Energy Florida is the electric utility for the DeLand area. Outages can be checked/reported on the Duke Energy outage map, by phone at 800-228-8485, by texting OUT to 57801 (from a mobile number on the account), or online.

Sandbag Distribution (Volusia County / DeLand)

Volusia County opens sandbag distribution sites ahead of storms and announces them per event through Emergency Management channels (county website/PIN, AlertVolusia, social media) and local media. During Hurricane Milton (Oct 2024), the county's pre-filled sandbag distribution ran at the Volusia County Fairgrounds in DeLand, with additional DeLand sites at Fire Rescue Station 45 (2580 W. State Road 44) and Volusia County Road and Bridge (2560 W. State Road 44). The standard limit has been 10 sandbags per household.

Weather Coverage for DeLand (NWS Melbourne)

DeLand is covered by the National Weather Service Melbourne, FL forecast office (WFO MLB). The NWS public forecast zone for the city is FLZ041 (Inland Volusia) and the county alert zone is FLC127 (Volusia County). These codes drive the api.weather.gov alert and forecast endpoints. Verified live via api.weather.gov point lookup for DeLand coordinates (29.0283, -81.3031).
